A Tour of Rothschild Masterpieces
at Christie’s New York
Sunday, October 8, 2023,
at 12:00 noon
Join us for an exploration of Rothschild Masterpieces, the installation of treasures to be auctioned on October 11–13, 2023, from Rothschild collections, consisting of extraordinary works of fine and decorative arts drawn from their homes across Europe. The collections include an array of important majolica produced in Renaissance Italy, hardstone boxes, silver and silver-gilt sculptures, European furniture and tapestries, Limoges enamels, Old Master paintings, and 17th-century jewelry.
This is a rare opportunity to view and learn more about the masterpieces collected beginning in the late-18th century by the French branch of this remarkable family.
Christie’s will have specialists on hand who have been informed that Decorative Arts Society contributors will be touring the installation as a group and Christie’s has asked the specialists to make themselves available to our group to answer our questions and provide added insight into the history of the collection, as well as individual items of particular interest on display.

Tour will begin promptly at 12:00 noon.

A Curator-Led Tour of the Installation:
How to Read European Decorative Arts
Friday, October 13, 2023, at 3:00 p.m.
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
New York, NY
Join us for a private tour of the installation How to Read European Decorative Arts with Daniëlle Kisluk-Grosheide, Henry R. Kravis Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This installation accompanies Kisluk-Grosheide's 2023 volume How to Read European Decorative Arts, part of the Met's How to Read series. The book and installation provide a peek into daily lives across Europe — from England, Spain and France to Germany, Denmark and Russia. Stemming from the 40 objects featured in the publication, which include furniture, tableware, utilitarian items, articles of personal adornment, devotional objects and display pieces, the installation covers many aspects of European society and lifestyles, from the modest to the fabulously wealthy. Kisluk-Grosheide will discuss masterpieces by renowned masters, as well as less familiar examples by talented amateurs, some of them previously unpublished, not only in light of their art-historical importance but also with regard to the social issues relevant to each, such as the impact of colonial slavery or the changing status of women artists.

A Private Tour of the Special Exhibition
Gold in America: Artistry, Memory, Power
Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Yale University Art Gallery
Led by John Stuart Gordon, Benjamin Attmore Hewitt Curator of American Decorative Arts
For millennia, gold’s glow, resistance to corrosion and rarity have made it a preferred material for objects meant to convey prestige, authority or devotion. Drawing on the Yale University Art Gallery’s holdings of American gold and augmented by paintings, photographs and other works of art, Gold in America: Artistry, Memory, Power was the gallery’s first exhibition since 1963 to survey the role of gold in American art and culture.
The exhibition featured more than 70 examples of gold and related material, with objects spanning more than 400 years, such as early colonial betrothal and mourning rings; a Gilded Age coffee service by Tiffany and Company; rare coins made from ore mined during the Gold Rush; a pair of shoe buckles from the late-18th century reflecting the wealth derived from the slave trade in the Caribbean; and works by contemporary artists who explore the medium’s historical associations, as well as the environmental and human costs of its extraction from the earth.
